Quick Answer
Your life path number is the most important number in numerology. To find it, reduce your birth month, day and year to single digits, add them together and reduce the total again to a number from 1 to 9, or to a master number (11, 22 or 33). Use the free life path calculator below to get your number and see the full working.
- Example: 14 July 1990 → 7 + 5 + 1 = 13 → 1 + 3 = Life Path 4
- Master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are never reduced
- Your life path describes your personality, strengths, challenges, love style and career direction
- In Vedic numerology, your mulank (root number) comes from your birth day only

What Is a Life Path Number?
In Pythagorean numerology, the system traced back to the Greek mathematician Pythagoras, every number carries a specific vibration. Your life path number is calculated from your full date of birth, which never changes, so numerologists treat it as your core blueprint: the path you are here to walk, the talents you bring and the lessons you keep meeting.
It is one of several “core numbers”. Your expression (destiny) number comes from your full name, your soul urge (soul) number from the vowels in your name, and your personal year number changes every birthday. Of all of them, the life path number is considered the most revealing.
How to Calculate Your Life Path Number (Step by Step)
- Reduce the month. July = 7. November = 11 (a master number, so keep it).
- Reduce the day. 14 → 1 + 4 = 5. A birthday of 29 → 2 + 9 = 11 (keep it).
- Reduce the year. 1990 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19 → 1 + 9 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1.
- Add the three numbers. 7 + 5 + 1 = 13.
- Reduce the total to a single digit unless it is 11, 22 or 33. 13 → 1 + 3 = 4.
Why reduce each part first? Adding all eight digits in one line usually gives the same single digit, but it can hide a master number. Reducing month, day and year separately is the method most professional numerologists use, and it is the one our calculator follows.

What Is Mulank? (Vedic Root Number)
In Vedic (Indian) numerology, your mulank, or root number, comes only from the day you were born. Your full birth date total is called your bhagyank (destiny number), which is very close to the Western life path number.
- How to calculate mulank: reduce your birth day to one digit. Born on the 14th: 1 + 4 = mulank 5. Born on the 29th: 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = mulank 2 (Vedic numerology usually reduces master numbers).
- Mulank describes how you behave day to day and how others see you.
- Bhagyank / life path describes your long-term destiny and life lessons.
Each mulank is linked to a planet in the Vedic tradition: 1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn and 9 Mars.
Life Path Number vs Angel Number
Your life path number and your personal angel number use the same calculation. The angel number simply repeats the digit, so Life Path 7 becomes angel number 777, and reads it as a message from your guardian angels. Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my life path number?
Reduce your birth month, day and year to single digits, add them, and reduce the total to one digit. Keep 11, 22 and 33 as master numbers. For 14 July 1990: 7 + 5 + 1 = 13, and 1 + 3 = 4, so the life path number is 4.
What is the rarest life path number?
Life Path 33 is considered the rarest, because the birth date has to total exactly 33 without being reduced earlier. Life Paths 11 and 22 are also uncommon.
What is mulank and how do I calculate it?
Mulank is the Vedic root number, calculated only from your birth day. Reduce the day to a single digit: someone born on the 23rd has mulank 2 + 3 = 5.
What is the difference between a life path number and a soul number?
Your life path number comes from your birth date and describes your life purpose. Your soul number (soul urge) comes from the vowels in your full birth name and describes your inner desires.
Can my life path number change?
No. It is based on your date of birth, so it stays the same for life. Numbers based on your name, or your personal year number, can change.
Which life path numbers are most compatible?
Numbers in the same group tend to get along: 1, 5 and 7 (independent), 2, 4 and 8 (grounded), and 3, 6 and 9 (creative and caring). Compatibility in numerology is a guide, not a rule.
